Stop Climate Catastrophe

CLIMATE EMERGENCY!
  • The years from 2014-2019 have been the hottest on record. (2)
  • Levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are up 46 per cent. (4)
  • Every day 80,000 acres (324 square km) of rainforest are destroyed. (7)
DIET OF DISASTER – LIVESTOCK FARMING AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The tragedy is that livestock are at the heart of all the world’s great environmental catastrophes and currently there appears to be no attempt to rein in the unbridled expansion of the global meat and dairy industry. In fact the opposite is true – it is expanding almost exponentially with massive subsidies to encourage its growth. (15)

CURRENT GLOBAL CONSUMPTION PATTERNS WOULD REQUIRE
A SECOND EARTH

Natural resources are currently being consumed at 1.5 times the capacity that Earth can provide. (1)

LAND USE
  • Livestock covers 45% of all land on earth. (52)
  • 83% of the world’s farmland is used to rear livestock. (11)
  • 1/3 of all rangeland on our planet is desertified, with animal agriculture being the main driving force. (13)
  • A meat-eating diet requires 18 times more land than a vegan diet. (14)
TIPPING POINTS
COULD ARRIVE SUDDENLY

Sudden shifts in the Earth’s natural systems could arrive precipitously, without warning. (3) (Dr. Alan Hastings, professor at University of California, Davis in the USA and one of the world’s foremost mathematical model experts)

ANIMALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
  • The 13 biggest dairy companies in the world have the same combined greenhouse gas emissions as the UK, the sixth biggest economy in the world. (34)
  • More than 70 billion land animals are slaughtered for food each year. (25)
  • Industrial farming is driving the 6th mass extinction of life on earth, (26)
  • Globally, 28,000 species are threatened with extinction – 27% of all assessed species. (27)
WATER SUPPLY
  • 3,000 litres of water is required to produce 1 hamburger (22) – equivalent to 2 months’ worth of showers for the average Westener.
  • 2,030 litres of water are needed to produce 450g of eggs; it’s nearly double that for cheese. (23)
  • 11,197 litres of water are needed to produce 450g of beef; for the same amount of tofu, it’s 995 litres. (24)
OCEANS
  • Fishless oceans could be a reality by 2048. (17)
  • Up to 2.7 trillion animals are pulled from our oceans every year. (18)
  • Only 3% of the world’s oceans are free from human pressure. (19)
  • The leading cause of plastic in the oceans is abandoned fishing gear. (20)
DEFORESTATION
  • Every minute, 7 football fields’ worth of Amazon forest is bulldozed to clear more room for livestock. (16)
  • Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of the destruction in the Amazon. (28)
  • Up to 135 plant, animal and insect species are lost every day due to rainforest destruction. (29)
  • Between 1990 and 2016, the world lost 1.3 square km of forest – an area larger than South Africa. (30)
EATING MEAT HAS ‘DIRE’ CONSEQUENCES FOR THE PLANET

To feed a growing global population and curtail climate change, scientists say we need to radically change our food systems. (42)
