Costs of Global Warming

Damage from rising seas, floods and heat waves due to the loss of Arctic Sea ice will cost the sectors of agriculture, real estate and insurance up to
19 trillion GBP by 2050. Heat waves, flooding, and other factors are already resulting in hundreds of billions of pounds lost annually. (5&6)

ATTRIBUTABLE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

At least 54 billion GBP of the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 can be attributed directly to climate breakdown, according to research that could lead to a radical reassessment of the costs of damage from extreme weather. (38)

Global losses due to natural disasters could triple to 146 billion GBP per year by 2100. Damage from climate change-related powerful cyclones could add to this up to 46 billion GBP annually. (21)

 

In the 2009 Copenhagen climate change summit, nations approved a
24 billion GBP fund to help vulnerable countries cope with climate change impacts, plus agreed to provide
79 billion GBP per year from 2020.

Costs of Factory Farming

HIDDEN COST OF FEEDING GRAIN TO FARM ANIMALS TO HIT 1.05 TRILLION GBP A YEAR

Campaigners say humans must address the huge hidden costs of industrial farming, such as wasted food and calories.
Cheap food is something we pay for three times, once at the checkout, again in tax subsidies and again in the enormous clean up cost to our health and environment. (39)

Health Costs

The NHS is ‘collapsing’ under the weight of chronic diseases many of which could be prevented and treated by addressing diet and lifestyle factors, according to Dr. Alicja Baczynska, a Specialist Registrar in Geriatric Medicine. He says the current state of the healthcare system – which seeks to treat chronic illness rather than prevent it – is causing frustration and disillusion among an increasing number of NHS doctors and staff.
